CALL TO WORSHIP

For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”

Who has shone in our hearts To give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God

In the face of Jesus Christ.

OPENING HYMN: “Stand by Me” #512 UMH

OPENING PRAYER O God of all the nations,

You manifested your love by sending your only Son into the world

That all might live through him.

Pour your Spirit on your Church,

That it may fulfill his command to preach the gospel everywhere;

Send forth laborers into your harvest;

Defend them in all dangers and temptations;

Give them grace to bear faithful witness to you;

Endue them with zeal and love, that they may turn many to righteousness;

Through the same your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SCRIPTURE Mark 1:14-20

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Awesome, holy and loving God,

We acknowledge that tears and smiles

are both an important part of life.

May these gifts be instrumental

in wiping away the tears and bringing smiles

to your children throughout the world.

Our prayer is that no one will miss the joy.

Make it be so. Amen.

Lord in your Mercy, Hear our Prayer.

Human Relations Day

There are many today who are living in the margins of society, those struggling to survive. Over and over Jesus served people like this. To continue the ministry of Jesus, Human Relations Day calls all of us to participate in helping all God’s children to realize their potential through faith-based volunteer programs, community developers and programs that work with at-risk teens. Use electronic giving or your personal check sent to the church designating an amount for Human Relations Day any time in January or February.

CALL TO WORSHIP

It's coming: the Kingdom of God is coming!

Let your Reign, O God, be acknowledged among all people.

We stand on the threshold of truth.

We are perched on the branches of justice.

Across the horizon, we see the outline of peace and harmony.

With privilege comes responsibility,

With responsibility comes accountability,

With accountability comes honesty,

With honesty comes faithfulness.

God of Creation and history, equip us to live faithfully in your Kingdom!

OPENING HYMN: “How Great is our God” #3003 W&S

OPENING PRAYER O Lord, we come this morning

knee-bowed and body-bent before thy throne of grace.

O Lord- this morning- bow our hearts beneath our knees,

and our knees in some lonesome valley.

We come this morning like empty pitchers to a full fountain,

with no merits of our own.

O Lord, open up a window of heaven,

and lean out far over the battlements of glory,

and listen this morning, Amen.

SCRIPTURE John 1:43-51 John Meader

1 Samuel 3:1-20

Human Relations Day Sunday, January 17, 2021

We are all family. When we walk past our neighbor who is hiding in plain sight, we limit the gifts and graces that our sisters and brothers in Christ bring to the table. We limit the experiences, the voices, and the beloved community that take place through mutual sharing of gifts. With a special offering celebrating Human Relations Day, we join with United Methodists around the world, remembering that the size of the table of divine love is unlimited.

Across the United Methodist connection, we come together to help bridge the gap between church and community by participating in an offering set aside for Human Relations Day. For more than half a century, United Methodists have observed this churchwide special Sunday in recognition of the message Jesus demonstrated during his life: all of God’s children are important.

One of the wonderful aspects of The United Methodist Church is that we can do so much more together than we ever could do on our own. On Human Relations Day, we join other UMC congregations in a special offering to support neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, community advocacy through United Methodist Voluntary Services and work with at-risk youth through the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Programs.

In recognizing Human Relations Day, we are called to make an impact in communities where people struggle because they don’t have the tools or resources to reach their God-given potential. Our gifts are part of building the beloved community through faith-based volunteer programs, community developers, and programs that work with at-risk teens.

Sunday, January 17 is Human Relations Day in the United Methodist Church. You can respond to the needs of others with your special gift. Use electronic giving or your personal check sent to the church designating an amount for “Human Relations Day.” Offerings can be given at any time in January or February.
