Supporting Seneca Street United Methodist Church: A Call to Action
As we approach the holiday season, we’re reminded of the importance of giving and serving those in need within our communities. Seneca Street United Methodist Church, located in the Seneca-Babcock neighborhood of Buffalo, NY, is working tirelessly to meet the needs of underserved families. Under the leadership of Pastor Dee Finch, Seneca Street UMC offers a wide range of ministries to feed the hungry, clothe children, and spread the love of Christ in a neighborhood facing significant challenges.
As the last church in the area, Seneca Street UMC relies heavily on the support of outside congregations and individuals to continue their mission. This is where we, at Hamburg United Methodist Church, can step in and make a meaningful impact.
Seneca Street UMC has a variety of urgent needs in the coming months, from financial support for building repairs to contributions of food and clothing. Here are some key ways we can assist:
Immediate Needs
Boiler Repairs: The church’s boiler needs immediate repair. Full repairs may cost up to $15,000.
Winter Clothing for Children: Donations of winter hats, gloves, and jackets will help keep local kids warm as temperatures drop.
Healthy Snacks: Contributions of soft granola bars, juice boxes, fresh fruit, cereal, and funds for utility assistance are welcome.
Upcoming Events
Thanksgiving Meal Outreach (November 26): Turkeys, rotisserie chickens, and pantry items are needed to provide meals for 175 families. Donations should be delivered by Sunday, November 24.
Christmas Shoppe for Kids (December 7): Seneca Street UMC is collecting donated gifts so children can "shop" for their families and pets. Please send donations by December 2.
Breakfast with Jesus (December 14): Donations of pancake mix, sausage, bacon, eggs, and milk are needed for this special holiday breakfast.
Christmas Party (December 21): Volunteers and donations for crafts, food, and activities are needed to make this event joyful for the kids in the community.
Ongoing Volunteer & Donation Opportunities
Sunday Meal Ministry: Sign up to provide a meal for 80-100 people at the Sunday Community Meal. You can prepare and serve the meal yourself, or fund the meal for $400.
Food Pantry Support: Seneca Street UMC’s pantry is running low on essentials. Non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, sauce, diapers, and baby formula are urgently needed.
Financial Support for Projects
In addition to donations of food and clothing, Seneca Street UMC is in need of financial support for several key projects, including:
Boiler and building repairs.
A new sign to better communicate with the local community.
Utility bills, which are a constant challenge to keep up with.
Support for Pastor Dee’s salary as she leads this vital ministry.
We encourage everyone at Hamburg United Methodist Church to prayerfully consider how you can support Seneca Street UMC. Whether you choose to donate financially, provide supplies, or volunteer your time, your contribution will help sustain the life-changing work being done in the Seneca-Babcock neighborhood.
If you feel called to help, please contact Pastor Dee Finch at (585) 330-2710 or via email at pastordeefinch@gmail.com.
You can also donate directly via givetosenecaumc@gmail.com.
Let’s join together in showing the love of Christ to our neighbors in Buffalo as they work to build a stronger, more hopeful community. Thank you for your generosity and continued support.
“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” — Proverbs 19:17
About The Fill a Shoebox Mission
The shoeboxes stay within the United States, benefiting individuals in Southeastern Kentucky, ne of our nation's most isolated, rural, and distressed areas.. This region faces chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountainous terrain, creating significant obstacles for residents.
Founded in 1921, Red Bird Mission was born as an answer to a prayer. Located in the southeastern corner of Kentucky, it provides education and Christian evangelism ministries to the area’s residents. Red Bird Mission is part of one of three United Methodist missionary conferences in the U.S. and is the most comprehensive mission effort of The United Methodist Church. Its outreach and services address the whole person—spiritual, physical, social, and economic.
United Methodists of Upper New York have participated in the shoebox mission for several years, contributing to five key program areas:
Education
Health
Housing Improvement
Outreach
Economic Opportunity
Completed Boxes Deadline: November 14, 2024

CALL TO WORSHIP
Thank you, Creator of the Universe,
for the people gathered around us today.
We give thanks for the things of the earth that gives us the means of life.
Thank you for the plants, animals and birds that we use as food and medicine.
Thank you for the natural world, in which we find the means to be clothed and housed.
Thank you, Lord, for the ability to use these gifts of the natural world.
Help us to see our place among these gifts, not to squander them or think of them as means for selfish gain.
May we respect the life of all you have made.
May our spirits be strengthened by using only what we need, and may we use our strength to help those who need us. Amen.

PRAYER FOR OUR COUNTRY
O God, keep our whole country under your protection.
Wipe out sin from this land; lift it up from the depth of sorrow,
O Lord, our Shining Light.
Save us from this deep grief and misfortune, Lord of all nations.
Bless us with your wisdom, so that the poor may not be oppressed,
and the rich may not be oppressors.
Make this nation having no ruler except God, a nation having no authority but that of Love. Amen.
