Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Lane and I are delighted to begin a first year of married life with you, as I start year eight as Pastor of Hamburg UMC and year three with Four Corners, Versailles and Gowanda! When I moved to Western New York in July of 2018, I had no idea what the future would hold. It has been a wild ride!
In the time I’ve been with you, I am preparing to move for a second time, this time to live in a parsonage (I hope for the rest of my time with you). Abraham has graduated from High School and in September will begin College at Saint Lawrence University. Andrew is starting Middle School. And now, I have bonus kids whose lives I’ll get to discover as well.
July also brings some bittersweet news, one of our retired pastors will be taking an appointment to the Orchard Park United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Ewart Morris will be away from us leading our neighbors in praise and prayer. I ask you keep him, Gail, and the Orchard Park congregation in prayer as they make this transition together.
I am excited for Summer, for all the events of the Church–Our Church Picnic will be Held Sunday August 3rd at 11am at Versailles, and BurgerFest (JULY 19th) excitement is just around the corner! Between picnics, BurgerFest, HUMANGO (AUG 17), and all of the other Summer events in our lives together, I look forward to the chance to celebrate a new phase of my life, and a continuation of our ministries of sharing Christ with our neighborhoods!
In Christ, With you,
Pastor David Nicol

Supporting the Journey
By Phoebe Glover
Last month, I shared that I had the opportunity to represent HUMC as a Youth Equalization Member at the 2025 Upper New York Annual Conference. It was an amazing experience that really showed me how much young voices matter in The United Methodist Church—and it introduced me to two opportunities that could help me grow even more: the Global Young People’s Convocation (GYPC) and the Mission of Peace (MOP).
This month, I’m reaching out to ask for your support—through prayer, encouragement, and if you're able, help with the costs to make these trips possible.
GYPC 2026 – Dublin, Ireland
GYPC only happens once every four years and brings together United Methodist youth from all over the world. In 2026, it will be held in Dublin, Ireland—and since I’m a rising junior in high school, this is the only time I’ll be able to go while I’m still in the age range (13–18). By the next one, I’ll be in college.
At the event, I’ll attend sessions and workshops where we talk about faith, global issues, and how young people can lead in the church. The workshops I’ve already signed up for include:
UMC theology and spirituality
Human trafficking and arranged marriage
Sexism and feminism
The rise of nationalism and extremism
Media and communications in ministry
I’m really excited about these topics and plan to bring back what I learn to share and make a difference at HUMC.
I’ve already registered and applied for financial aid through UMC Discipleship Ministries that would cover the $799 registration fee. I’ll find out by January 2026 if I got it. If I don’t receive the scholarship, I’ll have to cancel because I won’t be able to afford the rest of the cost. The total (including airfare, hotel, and group sightseeing) is about $3,700.
Pastor David and I are looking into some other ways to help with funding, but I’ll still need support from our church community to make this happen.
Mission of Peace – 2026
The Mission of Peace (MOP) is a special trip where a small group of high school students travel internationally to meet with communities working for peace and justice. It’s run by the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the UMC, and the goal is to learn what peace looks like in different parts of the world—and how we can live out our faith in those ways too.
This year is my last chance to apply. Since the trip is only for high schoolers, I won’t be able to go in 2027 as i'll be in the middle of winter training and meeting college rowing performance goals. So if I’m going to do this, it has to be in 2026.
The application hasn’t opened yet, and I don’t know the location or cost, but I’m getting everything ready so I can apply right away. After seeing the presentation about MOP at the Annual Conference, I really felt like God was calling me to this opportunity.
How You Can Help
I’m inviting anyone who feels called to support me—whether that’s financially, through prayer, or just cheering me on from the sidelines. It all means a lot.
Group – $500+
A private, in-person presentation after I get back (with photos, video clips, stories and reflections not included elsewhere). This will be hosted in the Parlor at HUMC
Access to private online photo albums and short vlog-style videos
Individual– $250+
Access to private online photo albums and short vlog-style videos I’ll make during the trip
If you’d like to donate, please make your check payable to Hamburg United Methodist Church with “Youth Christian Leadership” in the memo line. You can mail it or drop it off at the church office. If you’d rather help in another way—like with travel/hotel points, or some other way—please let me or Pastor David know!
Even if you’re not able to give financially, I’d love your prayers. Here are a few things I’d appreciate prayer for:
Discernment – as I apply and decide what to commit to
Provision – that the support I need will come together
Growth – that I’ll be ready for what God wants to show me
Boldness – to speak up, listen deeply, and connect with others
Safety – for me and all the youth participating in these programs
Thank you so much for believing in me. Whether you help through prayer, donations, or just encouragement, I’m truly grateful to be part of a church that values youth and gives us space to lead. I’ll do my best to make you proud and to come back with stories and lessons that can bless our whole church.
Celebrating the 2025–2026 Julia Platt Memorial Scholarship Recipients
By Cristina Glover
The Julia Platt Memorial Scholarship continues to honor the life and legacy of Julia Platt—an extraordinary woman remembered for her deep faith, commitment to education, and tireless service within the United Methodist community. Each year, this scholarship uplifts the next generation of leaders by supporting young people who reflect Julia’s values of compassion, perseverance, and service.
Thanks to increased outreach efforts, this year’s program drew an exceptional pool of applicants from United Methodist Churches across the region. We are thrilled to announce that eight students have been selected to receive scholarships for the 2025–2026 academic year. Of those, seven awardees received $1,700, and one recipient received $1,000 to purchase a much-needed computer for an upcoming certification program.
These recipients represent the very best of our faith community: service-minded, resilient, and ready to lead with love. Read more about a few of their inspiring stories below:
Kiah Bradley
Kiah embodies the spirit of excellence in both her academic journey and in the way she
lives out her faith. Her commitment to service is shown through regular volunteer work with community organizations, supporting charitable causes, and mentoring younger individuals to help them find direction and purpose. Kiah sees helping others as a continual way of life rather than an occasional act. Her United Methodist faith has shaped her spiritually and inspired her to pursue a quality Christian education where she can grow both intellectually and in her faith. As she looks ahead to attending Roberts Wesleyan University, she is eager to be part of a supportive, faith-centered environment that nurtures both academic and spiritual development.
Kerry Ann Lewis
A devoted member of Lincoln Memorial UMC, Kerry Ann is currently attending the University at Buffalo with aspirations of becoming a lawyer. Over the years, she has been actively involved in her church through youth events, food drives, and Sunday children’s programs. Her community service also includes volunteering at a local library and at a Day Rehabilitation Center, where she connected with individuals with disabilities. In school, she has taken on leadership roles as captain of the tennis team and as a member of the rifle team. Kerry Ann credits the United Methodist Church for instilling in her a deep sense of purpose, responsibility, and belief in herself—qualities that continue to fuel her pursuit of higher education and a meaningful career.
Kameron Olden
Now in his second year at Niagara University, Kameron is studying Computer and Information Sciences. He is an active member of Lincoln Memorial UMC and a dedicated volunteer with Legends In The Making (LITM), a nonprofit that focuses on youth development and community engagement. Through LITM, Kameron mentors young people, helps organize events, and supports educational programming. His church upbringing taught him the importance of using one’s gifts to serve others, and his experiences volunteering in the food pantry and at church events helped solidify his dedication to making a positive difference. Kameron is committed to using his education and leadership skills to lift up others in his community.
Amanda Zwetsch
Amanda has grown up within the Seneca Street UMC community, beginning as a participant in afterschool and summer programs and eventually becoming a teen leader and mentor. Her leadership extended into her role in the Conference Council on Youth Ministries (CCYM), where she chaired the Gathering and Organizing Committee and played a key role in statewide youth events. Despite facing significant personal and financial challenges, Amanda credits her church family for offering steadfast support throughout her life—providing everything from tutoring and winter clothing to food and housing assistance. Today, Amanda is pursuing a Medical Assistant Certificate and received a scholarship to help cover the cost of the computer required for her program. Her resilience and service to others are a testament to the transformative power of a supportive faith community.
Luis Folch
Luis has been part of Seneca Street UMC since kindergarten and has blossomed through the church’s nurturing support. Diagnosed with autism and nonverbal for many years, Luis found confidence and community through the church’s afterschool programs, reading camps, and vacation bible school. His love for animation and cooking gave him creative outlets to express himself and build self-esteem. He served as a Mayor Summer Youth intern and found joy in mentoring children and helping with church activities. Luis is graduating with honors and will be attending Villa Maria College, where he plans to continue developing his artistic talents. His journey reflects perseverance, faith, and the power of encouragement.
Jayvonne Covington
Jayvonne found a sense of belonging and stability through Seneca Street UMC and its affiliated community programs. Introduced by his girlfriend’s family, he found mentorship, support, and purpose within the church. Under the guidance of trusted adults, he completed high school and began studying Criminal Justice at Daemen University. Now completing his freshman year, Jayvonne is focused on a future where he can advocate for others who feel overlooked or marginalized. For him, this scholarship is more than financial assistance; it’s a sign that his journey matters and that he can turn his past struggles into a force for good.
Noah Steirheim A second-year student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a member of Williamsville UMC, Noah is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While balancing a rigorous academic schedule, he remains connected to his home church as a confirmation mentor, assistant tech volunteer, and band member—roles he continues to support during breaks. Last year, he also played in the praise band at the Upper New York Annual Conference and did so again this May. Noah’s leadership has included helping identify and prepare others to fill the roles he stepped away from during college. On campus, he plays on the rugby team and serves as the equipment chair, and he participates in the Flying Pigs Society, an organization that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship. Noah credits his United Methodist upbringing for instilling in him the values of perseverance, gratitude, and generosity—principles that guide both his academic and spiritual journey. His commitment to education is rooted in a desire to give back and make a lasting impact on others.
Abraham Nicol
A recent graduate of St. Francis High School and a member of Eden UMC, Abraham has consistently demonstrated leadership throughout his youth. He has taken on responsibilities in Vacation Bible School and community events like the Eden Corn Festival. A dedicated athlete and active community member, he has decided to pursue Political Science at St. Lawrence University, hoping to prepare for a career of informed, value-driven service. His journey reflects a quiet confidence and a readiness to lead with integrity.
Each of these students represents the values that Julia Platt held dear: faith, perseverance, and a heart for service. We congratulate all eight awardees and invite you to continue supporting this important scholarship fund.
To learn more about the Julia Platt Memorial Scholarship Fund, or how to apply please contact the church office. Applications for the 2026 Julia Platt Memorial Scholarship open January 1.
Cristina Glover has overseen the Julia Platt Memorial Scholarship application process since 2023. She works closely with applicants and the scholarship committee to ensure a fair and meaningful selection process.
A Note from the Chairperson:
Special thanks to Rev. Dr. Crispell, our newest committee member, who graciously presented the awards on April 25. Additional thanks go to all the committee members who have worked diligently to improve the application process. The committee is proud to recognize the hard work, leadership, and Christian values demonstrated by each of this year’s recipients—students who are truly role models for the next generation of young adults.

Se's Back—and so is the Bazaar!
Granny’s up in the attic hunting for treasures to sell at her tables—and you should be too! It’s time to start gathering those clean, gently used household items that she’ll proudly display and sell at this year’s Bazaar.
Important Reminder from Granny:
She’s tough but fair—only clean, usable household goods will be accepted.
No appliances, please!
Room 19 is now accepting your donations
This year’s Annual Bazaar, hosted by the United Women in Faith and supported by the whole church, will be held November 7 & 8. In addition to all your favorite traditions—like the bake sale, pecans and fruitcakes, and the soup and chili sale—this year’s event will also feature an expanded vendor fair in place of the usual HUWF crafts.
Questions? Contact Bazaar Co-Chairs: Rose Caldwell or Sue Gagne.
Shower Held to Celebrate Lane
A bridal shower to celebrate Lane Fischer's marriage to our pastor, Rev. David Nicol, was held on Sunday, May 18 in the Parlor following the worship service. More than 30 women of the church joined in to welcome Lane and offer her our best wishes.
We each shared a little about ourselves to help Lane get to know us, we completed fun marriage advice and wishes cards, and we mingled. The menu included mini sandwiches, mini muffins, a celebratory cake and punch. In lieu of individual gifts, gift cards and a donation for the Sparks of Hope trust fund was presented to Lane from the ladies' contributions.

Lane sent a lovely thank you note:
"Dear HUMC Ladies,
Thank you to all who came and/or contributed to my lovely shower and generous gifts. David and I are truly grateful to you all.
Warmest regards,
Lane"
Congratulations, Lane, and Pastor David, too!
