Introducing our Treasurer

Emily Slocum

We welcome Emily Slocum, who was recently appointed Treasurer for our church after a search process by the Staff Parish Relations Committee. After some transition time with Kathy Manguso, our outgoing treasurer, she is quickly coming up to speed on her new role.

Emily has her Bachelor’s in accounting from Hilbert College and her Master’s in Business Administration from Saint Bonaventure University. Emily started her professional career as an accounts payable clerk at Mayer Bros Apple Products in 2017, then became a Senior Accountant at Delaware North before landing her current role as Senior Cost Accountant at Prestolite Electric in Arcade, NY.

Emily currently resides in Hamburg with her husband, Ryan, her step-daughters, Molly & Stella, her 5 month-old son, Charlie, and family dogs, Chewie and Apollo. Emily loves to cook, decorate cookies, and paint Buffalo scenes. Emily’s favorite places in the Buffalo area include Silo City, the Buffalo Outer Harbor, and the Buffalo Central Terminal!

If you need to reach Emily, email her at treasurer@hamburgumc.org.

We look forward to introducing you to Emily during our June 16 service.

Again, welcome Emily!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP

Sing! Sing to the Lord a new song!

for “new every morning” mercies,

for “What the Lord has done for you!”

Sing! Sing to the Lord a new song!

for forgiving the sin that only you and God know about,

for grace that is more than sufficient.

Sing! Sing to the Lord a new song!

for every mountain, you brought us over,

for hardship, you saw us through,

our souls sing, “Hallelujah, yes, and amen.”

OPENING MUSIC: “This is My Father’s World” #144 UMH

OPENING PRAYER:

We confess to you, all-knowing God, what we are.

We are not the people we like others to think we are.

We are afraid to admit, even to ourselves, what lies in the depths of our souls.

But we cannot hide our true selves from you.

You know us as we are, and yet you love us.

Help us not to shrink from self-knowledge.

Teach us to respect ourselves for your sake.

Give us the courage to put our trust in your guiding power.

Raise us out of the paralysis of guilt into the freedom and energy of forgiven people.

And for those who through long habit find forgiveness hard to accept,

we ask you to break the chains of their bondage and set them free;

through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen

Dear Saints,

ree

As I write to you, on the eve of Annual Conference, I am glad to expect another year with all of you! It has been a remarkable year for United Methodists, with a General Conference that has proposed regionalization of the Church, modified our Social Principles, and adjusted the General Church budget.

Our need for one another, on a local level, continues to be significant. While disaffiliations and changes in the denomination have strained some relationships, the Body of Christ gathering at Hamburg, Gowanda, Versailles, and Four Corners continues to share in ministry, and genuine love.

The Sunday after the Annual Conference, I am planning a joint service of worship in Hamburg, to celebrate and reflect on our shared ministry: one extended family in four households is far stronger than four households without one another! We have a variety of gifts, different resources, and a common purpose, to live together and work together as the Body of Christ.

The Church as the Body of Christ is one of my favorite metaphors, because while a body may continue with reduced function without a beneficial part, or even gain health after excision of a cancer or infection, few (if any) parts of a body can function alone. We need each other, as Christians. As the old baptismal liturgy affirms “the Church is of God and will be preserved to the end of time,” though congregations, denominations, and members, may only have a season of that everlasting assurance. As individuals and congregations, we are stronger, healthier, and more capable of living out God’s call together.

At its best, Methodist connectionism is about being Christian together, and Conference is supposed to remind and affirm that. Come Sunday, I hope to share a little of that with all of you.

Serving the Risen Christ, with you,

Pastor David Nicol

  1. Jesse Owens, the man who outran Hitler by Jesse Owens. At the 1936 World Olympic Games, Adolf Hitler set out to prove the superiority of the Aryan race.  Jesse Owens proved him wrong.  In this spiritual autobiography, the Olympic star tells how he found God.  He proved that superiority wasn’t based on the color of one’s skin or the cultural origin of one’s parentage.  His story demonstrates the inner workings of a real person, the odds against which he struggled, the family and friends who gave him strength, and the God who answered his prayers.

  2. When the Game is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box by John Ortberg. In the game of life, many good things come our way, but even the best “prizes” are temporary.  In the end, you don’t get to keep a thing unless it is the right prize.  Ortberg helps us to focus our hearts and lives on what is truly worth winning because it lasts forever.  When we enter the kingdom of God, we can only take the love we have for each other and our own souls.  Discover for yourself how to live passionately and boldly, how to do what is pleasing to God, how to find your true mission and offer your best, and how to seek the richness of “being” instead of the richness of “having.”

  3. Al I Really Know I Learned in Kindergarten by Robert Fulghum. A book to raise the spirits and warm the heart, this collection of uncommon thoughts on common things has taken on a life of its own.  They reflect his vision on the wonder of everyday life.  His writing has a clarity and power that touch virtually everyone who reads his work.  Every essay in this book will affect you, making you pause to reflect on your own life.

June is a month focused on men.  You can find books for study and devotions in our church library written by and about men.  You may find new insights, hope, joy, and the blessings of Christian love for your heart.

Join us for a virtual fellowship! This group is a place to share prayer requests, devotions, concerns, joys, and even some humor with your church family. Join the Hamburg UMC Fellowship group on Facebook.

PRAYER CONCERNS?

If you would like to request prayer for yourself or for someone else you may call Barb Meader at home (number 716-648-1273), call or text her cell (number716-548-4139), or call Cristina at the church office (716-649-8080), and we will add your request to the weekly prayer list. You could also email Barb at Bmeader712017@gmail.com.

“Prayer, Care and Share” is a group of people who have committed to pray every day for requests made.  An updated list of requests is emailed to members each Monday.  In an emergency, you can call and we will relay the request immediately using our phone chain

Members also pray daily for and send out cards of encouragement monthly to our homebound members and those living in nursing homes.  We send cards to those experiencing lengthy illnesses.  On the first Wednesday of each month, PCS meets at church at 10:0am in the library.

James 5:16 says “…Pray for one another”.

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

If you would like to be a part of this daily prayer ministry or have questions about it, talk to Barb or another member.  If you know of someone in our church family who would appreciate receiving a card of encouragement or get well, please let Barb know.
