Our little pantry at Sparks of Hope is nearly empty, and our shelves are bare. Members of our recovery community rely on your generosity to see them through the hard times. Please drop off nonperishable groceries when Sparks is open, or leave them inside the pantry.

We light this candle as a sign of the coming light of Christ. We see hope for the days when the nations shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks;

nation shall not lift up sword against nation,

neither shall they learn war anymore.

When the wolf shall dwell with the lamb,

the calf and the lion and the fatling together,

Heartfelt Thanks to All from Bazaar Committee

All of us who plan and work on making the Homespun Holiday Bazaar happen want to offer our deep and heartfelt thanks to all of you who answered the call and pitched in so many different ways and on various days! You baked, hauled, set up tables, promoted, sorted books, greeted, shared your ministry with others, and did so many other things – thank you! We could not have done it without everyone’s help and support.

You also supported the bazaar with your purchases – thank you for that!

We are grateful to report that the Bazaar netted a profit of more than $5,100! In addition to already helping our own church right off the top with a donation of $1,000, we will designate local organizations to receive some of the remaining proceeds at our next United Women in Faith (UWF) and Sarah Circle meeting and will report back to you.

Because of all of the gifts of time and talents given to this event, the funds will help to fulfill the UWF mission to “connect and nurture women so that they can inspire, influence and impact local and global communities.”

NEW KNITTING AND CROCHETING GROUP For Beginners and Others WHO: Anyone who wants to learn to knit or crochet; anyone who knows how and wants to be part of a group, learning from each other; and anyone who wants to help others learn. WHERE: Hamburg United Methodist Church WHEN: Starting in mid-January And it’s free! If this sounds like fun and you would like to give it a try, let us know! Call Dianne Caldwell at 716-549-3139 if your interest is crocheting, or Anne Brown at 716-649-1626 if you think you would like to learn to knit. We will ask you what days are good for you, including Saturdays.

RETIRED MEN’S FELLOWSHIP

The Retired Men’s Fellowship of Hamburg UMC will have their monthly lunch gathering on Tuesday, January 17, at 12 Noon a ZJ’s Restaurant in the Hamburg Village Plaza. All retired men are invited. Come and bring a friend for food and fellowship. At the December gathering, it was decided to send the 2022 monthly offering totaling $100.00 to Seneca Street UMC. With an additional gift of $25.00, a total of $125.00 was sent for Pastor Dee Finch’s salary. Thanks to all the retired men for their donations to support their ministry.

FUN FUNDRAISER FOR LITTLE LAMB PRESCHOOL

Returning your cans and bottles can be an easy way to donate $$ to Little Lamb Preschool. Just take them to Can Bottle Return, 4255 Clark Street in Hamburg (next to the former Vara Cleaners) and designate your refund to Little Lamb. They keep the money on record and periodically send Little Lamb a check. Easy for you…easy for them…and much appreciated by Little Lamb.

Recessional by James A. Michner. James Michner, in his novel Recessional, draws on his gift for storytelling, his deep understanding of American society, and his own life experiences to illuminate the challenges of aging and the dilemmas older adults and their families encounter in today’s world. Set in the Palms, a Florida retirement center, Recessional follows several residents over the course of a year as their stories unfold. When confronted with essential questions affecting their closely-knit community, the residents band together and offer the director their support and suggestions. They stand with him as he battles with the efforts of a fanatical organization to dictate how the elderly will be permitted to end their days. Michner’s story is a triumph from an American master.
Mustard Seeds – Thoughts on the Nature of God and Faith by Lynn Coulter. Lynn Coulter has written fifteen essays about the natural graces and “God signs” she has caught sight of during past hardships and that sustain her faith today. Her stories recount personal events (loved one’s death, job loss), universal stumbling blocks (busyness, worry), and more. Her fresh anecdotes unearth the little daily markers of God’s love and care while staying rooted in the Bible.
Everybody’s Normal Till You Get to Know Them by John Ortberg. None of us are normal, according to God’s definition, and the closer we get to each other, the plainer that becomes. Yet, for all our quirks and sins, we need each other. Community is one of our most fundamental requirements, so Ortberg focuses on the things that make the community tick. He gives a thought-provoking look at God’s heart, at others', and your own. He shows how community pays excellent dividends in happiness, health, support, and growth and how to discover the transforming power of being loved, accepted, and valued just the way we are.

On the cold and snowy days of January, curl up with a book from our church library and find new insights, hope, joy, and the blessings of a new year in your heart.

Human Relations Day Sunday, January 15, 2023

We are all family. When we walk past our neighbor who is hiding in plain sight, we limit the gifts and graces that our sisters and brothers in Christ bring to the table. We limit the experiences, the voices, and the beloved community that takes place through the mutual sharing of gifts. With a special offering celebrating Human Relations Day, we join with United Methodists around the world, remembering that the size of the table of divine love is unlimited.

Across the United Methodist connection, we come together to help bridge the gap between church and community by participating in an offering set aside for Human Relations Day. For more than half a century, United Methodists have observed this churchwide special Sunday in recognition of the message Jesus demonstrated during his life: all of God’s children are important.

One of the wonderful aspects of The United Methodist Church is that we can do so much more together than we ever could do on our own. On Human Relations Day, we join other UMC congregations in a special offering to support neighborhood ministries through Community Developers, community advocacy through United Methodist Voluntary Services, and work with at-risk youth through the Youth Offender Rehabilitation Programs.

In recognizing Human Relations Day, we are called to make an impact in communities where people struggle because they don’t have the tools or resources to reach their God-given potential. Our gifts are part of building beloved community through faith-based volunteer programs, community developers, and programs that work with at-risk teens.

Sunday, January 15 is Human Relations Day in the United Methodist Church. You can respond to the needs of others with your special gift. Offering envelopes will be available next to the offering plate in the sanctuary and at the Welcome Center. You may also use electronic giving or your personal check sent to the church designating an amount for “Human Relations Day.” Offerings can be given at any time in January or February.
