WELCOME

GREETING FROM PASTOR DAVID NICOL

CALL TO WORSHIP

We have come to affirm our historic faith.

To worship the God of our mothers and fathers,

the saints who have gone before us.

We have come to remember God’s benefits to us the living.

To respond in thanksgiving to the mighty works of God in our lives today.

We have come to affirm our trust in the God of all futures,

To whose name be blessing and honor, glory and power forever and ever. Amen.

HYMN “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” #384 UMH

OPENING PRAYER

O Living God of past and future,

we praise you for this present moment.

Fill us with your joy and empower us with your Holy Spirit,

that our strength may be renewed to sing a new song of your glory

in a world which longs for your healing and your peace.

All this we ask in the name of Jesus, in whom we become your new creation. Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

As we bring our tithes and offerings to you, O God, we are grateful that you have claimed us as your people.

For all the saints who went before us who have spoken to our hearts and touched us with your fire, we praise you. For all the saints who live beside us whose weaknesses and strengths are woven with our own, we praise you. For all the saints who live beyond us who challenge us to change the world with them, we praise you.

May we clearly recognize what it means to be called children of God, and to know we are to be your saints neither by our own inclination nor in our own strength, but simply by the call and the power of Christ Jesus our Savior. Amen!

DOXOLOGY #94 UMH PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

God, we give you thanks for the opportunity to offer to you our gifts and our service. On this Red Ribbon Sunday we give thanks to the many people who work with alcoholics and addicts. Their service has made relief from the effects of these spiritual diseases possible for so many. We are grateful that this church can be part of the solution in freedom from substance abuse, and we celebrate the miracles of grace and healing through recovery. Open our hearts and minds to new awareness, new understanding, and new action, that we might experience our own healing more deeply and grow in compassion as we serve others in your world. Amen.

GATHERING

CALL TO WORSHIP

Long ago, while Israel wandered in the desert, the people grumbled, saying to Moses, “give us water!”.

God had freed them from Egypt, given them manna and quail, and yet, they whined for water!

Long ago, while Israel wandered in the desert, the Lord told Moses, there would be water from a rock.

The Lord gave water, and the people drank their fill! Now we come for the water of life.

HYMN “Guide Me, O Great Jehovah” #127 UMH

OPENING PRAYER

Almighty God,

we confess that we are often swept up in the tide of our generation.

We have failed in our calling to be your holy people,

a people set apart for your divine purpose.

We live more in apathy born of fatalism that in passion born of hope.

We are moved more by the private ambition than by social justice.

We dream more of privilege and benefits than of service and sacrifice.

We try to speak in your name without relinquishing our glories,

Without nourishing our souls, without relying wholly on your grace.

Help us to make room in our hearts and lives for you.

Forgive us, revive us, and reshape us in your image. Amen.

DOXOLOGY #94 UMH PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Almighty God,

We thank you for all you have given us even to this day.

We thank you for food and air, and the water that makes up our bodies.

We have come to be filled by your Spirit, to encounter the fullness of life.

Like the Israelites, at times we grumble and fail to trust that you will give us all we need.

But the Lord is faithful, generation after generation, keeping promises to care for us,

a people called to worship and witness to the unchanging faithfulness of God.

Now, in gratitude we bring ourselves and our gifts,

in praise and thanksgiving for the unfailing love we have received.

Receive these gifts, and receive us as worthy of your service, we pray,

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
