TODAY IS WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY

Sunday, October 4 is being celebrated around the world by many Christian denominations. As a part of this celebration, the United Methodist Church receives a special offering that is designated for scholarships for youth and young adults who are facing financial obstacles that make higher education difficult or impossible. Offering envelopes will be with the offering plate for those attending church on Sundays. Others may include this offering in whatever way you give. Offerings may be given any time in October.

GATHERING

CALL TO WORSHIP

O give thanks to the Lord, call on God’s name,

Make known God’s deeds among the peoples!

Sing to the Lord, sing praises!

Tell of all God’s wonderful works!

HYMN “Christians, We Have Met to Worship”

OPENING PRAYER

Have mercy upon us, O God, according to your loving kindness.

According to the multitude of your tender mercies,

Blot out our transgressions.

Wash us thoroughly from our inequities, and cleanse us from our sins.

For we acknowledge our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us.

Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew a right spirit within us;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

DOXOLOGY #94 UMH PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

As we bring our tithes and offerings to you, O God of steadfast love, we thank you for the lessons of the past. We remember all that you have done for us; make us truly grateful. We remember times of joy and times of sorrow; may these experiences make us compassionate toward others. We share the memory of your people as they have journeyed through time; it is our story as well. May the richness of our past be the ground out of which love, hope, faithfulness, justice and peace blossom. We ask this in the name of the Prince of Peace, Jesus our friend and brother. Amen.

GATHERING

CALL TO WORSHIP

Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying,

“I will sing to the Lord, who has triumphed gloriously; the horse and its rider the Lord has thrown into the sea.

The Lord is my strength and my song, and has become my salvation;

this is my God whom I will praise.

I will exalt my father’s God who is a mighty warrior, whose name is the Lord.

Pharaoh’s chariots and his host the Lord cast into the sea; and his chosen officers are sunk in the Red Sea.

The floods cover them, they went down into the depths like a stone.

Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy.

“Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, terrible in glorious deeds, doing wonders?

You stretched out your right hand, the earth swallowed them.

In your steadfast love, you have led the people whom you have redeemed;

you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.

HYMN “Come Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain” #315 UMH

OPENING PRAYER

God our Savior, as once you delivered by the power of your mighty arm your chosen Israel through the waters of the sea, so now deliver your Church and all the peoples of the earth from bondage and oppression, to rejoice and serve you in freedom, through Jesus Christ Our Deliverer. Amen.

GATHERING

CALL TO WORSHIP

Though we have known hardship and pain, though life has not always turned out as we had hoped, we will stand here and say:

God’s steadfast love endures forever!

Though life becomes more complex, the deepest questions remain unanswered, and the mystery of faith deepens, we will say:

God’s steadfast love endures forever!

And though the pain of the world often seems more than we can bear or address, we will stand firm in our faith and say:

God’s steadfast love endures forever!

HYMN “Deep in the Shadows of the Past” #2246 TFWS

OPENING PRAYER

We thank you, O God, for the gift of life and a new day. Thank you for bringing each of us here and meeting us as we gather together. Bless this time of remembering the story of your faithfulness with the people of Israel and with us today. May you allow us, in our hearts and minds, to enter into the story of your people throughout time. Remind each of us of our journey from slavery to freedom, from death to life by the power of your almighty hand. We give you praise for the grace you offer us through Jesus Christ. Amen.
