GATHERING

CALL TO WORSHIP

Is someone here moving toward the twilight of life

and fearful of that which we call death?

Why be afraid? God is able.

Is someone here on the brink of despair because of the death of a loved one,

the breaking of a marriage, or the waywardness of a child?

Why Despair?

God is able to give us the power

to endure that which cannot be changed.

Is someone here anxious because of bad health?

Why be anxious? Come what may, God is able.

Surely God is able.

HYMN “Great is Thy Faithfulness” #140 UMH

OPENING PRAYER

I am no longer my own, but thine.

Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.

Put me to doing, put me to suffering.

Let me employed by thee or laid aside for thee,

Exalted for thee or brought low by thee.

Let me be full, let me be empty.

Let me have all things, let me have nothing.

I freely and heartily yield all things

To thy pleasure and disposal.

And now, O glorious and blessed God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

Thou art mint, and I am thine. So be it.

And the covenant which I have made on earth,

Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Almighty God, giver of every good and perfect gift,

Teach us to render to you all that we have and all that we are,

That we may praise you, not with our lips only,

But with our whole lives,

Turning the duties, the sorrows, and the joys of all our days,

Into a living sacrifice to you;

Through our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Let us pray to God in whose image we are made and who delights in the wholeness of all creation.

For the church

That in the face of death and evil, Christians may not fear but believe in the power and presence of Christ.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For the world

That threatened by the poison of inequity and war, people of good will may seek peace and reconciliation.

That world leaders may work to achieve a balance in which nations with an abundance assist those that are in need.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For those oppressed, afflicted or in need

That those for whom life has become a journey through the wilderness may experience God's abiding care in the loving concern of God's servants.

That those whose lives are dedicated to the care of sick people know that Jesus, the Divine Physician, goes with them in their labor.

That those who grieve for the loss of loved ones may be strengthened by the support of friends and the love of Christ.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For the needs of the local community

That those who question God's presence or purpose in their lives may find in us a loving support and in God's love an ultimate answer.

For those who work on behalf of social justice, may their prophetic voices find a willing response from our community.

For those who work in law enforcement, may their actions enable all people to live in safety.

For those who encourage dialogue among diverse groups, may we see that beyond our divisions we are members of one body.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For the Christian assembly

For us who have been brought near to God and to each other by the sacrifice of Christ, may we proclaim to all the peace that God has bestowed on us.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For the dead

That those who have crossed with Jesus from this life to the other side may become a new creation in Christ for all eternity.

Lord, hear our prayer.

We offer these prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord.

GATHERING

CALL TO WORSHIP

Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,

that God may teach us holy ways;

Come, let us go to the house of God,

so we may walk in paths with our God.

The LORD will judge between the nations,

war will cease, rifle barrels will become garden stakes,

tanks will become tractors, and missile silos upcycled to hold grain;

All people will experience the Peace of the LORD, no one shall make them afraid;

For the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.

HYMN “Hail to the Lord’s Anointed” #203 UMH

OPENING PRAYER

With all our heart, we take refuge in God most high,

Who created all things,

The merciful Father, Source of all goodness.

With all our heart, we take refuge in Christ,

The Redeemer from sin,

Who restores our true nature,

The perfect and mysterious Word.

With all our heart, we take refuge in the One who embraces the universe,

Who at all times and in all places responds to our needs,

The pure and tranquil Holy Spirit.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

All things come from you, O God,

And with gratitude we return to you what is yours.

You created all that is, and with love formed us in your image.

When our loved failed, your love remained steadfast.

You gave your only Son Jesus Christ to be our Savior.

All that we are, and all that we have, is a trust from you.

And so, in gratitude for all your gifts,

We offer you ourselves, and all that we have,

In union with Christ’s offering for us.

By your Holy Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other,

And one in ministry to all the world;

Through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
