Human Relations Day

Sunday, January 14, 2024

There are many today who are living within the margins of society, those struggling to survive. Over and over Jesus served people like this. To continue the ministry of Jesus, Human Relations Day calls all of us to participate in helping all of God’s children realize their potential through faith-based volunteer programs, community developers, and programs that work with at-risk teens.

Offering envelopes are available at the entrance to the sanctuary and at the Welcome

Center. Give your gift any time during January or February with your personal check or by electronic giving designating an amount for Human Relations Day

January Food Collection for Spark's Food Cupboard

ree

Dear Church Members,

Throughout January, Spark's Food Cupboard will collect essential food items to support the Hamburg community. Your contributions make a significant impact on those who rely on this assistance.

Items to Purchase:

  • Canned fruit (any type, preferably flip-top cans)

A designated basket labeled "SPARKS" will be placed in the Gathering Space for your convenience. Kindly place your donated food items in this basket and refrain from placing them directly in the cupboard outside Sparks. This arrangement will help manage the food inventory.

Your generosity and support are deeply appreciated. Let's come together to make a difference!

Thank you, Wendy and Dave Spaulding

ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP

Is someone here moving toward the twilight of life and fearful of that which we call death?

Why be afraid? God is able.

Is someone here on the brink of despair because of the death of a loved one, the breaking of a marriage, or the waywardness of a child?

Why despair? God is able to give us the power to endure that which cannot be changed.

Is someone here anxious because of bad health?

Why be anxious? Come what may, God is able.

Surely God is able.

OPENING MUSIC: “God Hath Spoken through the Prophets” #108 UMH

OPENING PRAYER: Eternal light, shine into our hearts. Eternal Goodness, deliver us from evil.

Eternal power, be our support.

Eternal Wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance.

Eternal Pity, have mercy upon us.

That with all our heart and mind and soul and strength we may seek your face and be brought by your infinite mercy to your holy presence;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP

The voice of God calls to us! Are you listening?

Speak, Lord, your servants are listening.

The hands of God beckon us! Are you paying attention?

Show us, Lord, your servants are paying attention.

The love of God asks us—are you ready to follow?

Guide us, Lord, and we, your servants, will follow.

Come, let us worship the God whose tenacious love never stops calling and beckoning and asking us to follow.

Thanks be to God! Amen.

 we want to hear your call;

 we experience your ministry

through the lives of peacemakers and justice seekers.

Guide us as we follow the path of shalom.

 We thank you

for the cloud of witnesses

 who have known your presence

in their struggles every step of the way to peace.

Your promise is sure that peace is possible

when we follow in the way you lead. Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

...And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

...And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,

we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving

as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us,

as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

...Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church,

all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father (God ), now and for ever.

Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader 1: Be Careful

Leader 2: Watch out! Leader 1: You might get a bad reputation coming to church with us. Leader 2: If you haven’t noticed, Jesus is known for keeping bad company. Leader 1: Jesus was always eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners. Leader 2: Jesus even called Levi, one of Rome’s tax collectors, and ranked him among the twelve apostles. Leader 1: You didn’t really expect to find this church full of saints did you?

Leader 2: Look around you. Every member of this church has confessed to being a sinner. Leader 1: So be careful!

Leader 2: Jesus came to call not the righteous, but sinners. Jesus, we have heard you call us to this place today. Our reputations are already smeared with our sin. We fit in here, with the rest of the sinners. We have come, so that you could set us back onto the narrow path of life.

OPENING MUSIC: “Shall we Gather at the River” #723 UMH

OPENING PRAYER: God of power and wonder,  we are awestruck by the glory of your presence. We rejoice at what we can see; we marvel at what we cannot see.

You dazzle us with your brightness; you overshadow us as with a great cloud. Loving, protecting, challenging, nurturing, you strengthen and transform us. May we love and serve you in all that we are and do. Glory be to you. Amen
