ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has come to set up the chosen people free. The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Savior from the house of David. Through the holy prophets, God promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us; to show mercy to our forebears and to remember the holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship without fear, holy and righteous in the Lord’s sight, all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way, To give God’s people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

OPENING HYMN: “O Wondrous Sight! O Vision Fair” #258 UMH

OPENING PRAYER

God of glory and mercy, before his death in shame your Son went to the mountain top, and you revealed his life in glory. where prophets witnessed to him, you proclaimed him your Son, but he returned to die among us. Help us face evil with courage, knowing that all things, even death, are subject to your transforming power. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

PRAYER FOR COURAGE TO DO JUSTICE

O Lord,

open my eyes that I may see the needs of others; open my ears that i may hear their cries; open my heart so that they need not be without succor:

let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong, nor afraid to defend the poor because of the anger of the rich.

Show me where love and hope and faith are needed, and use me to bring them to those places.

And so open my eyes and my ears that I may this coming day be able to do some work for peace for thee. Amen

GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

...And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

...And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,

we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving

as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us,

as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

...Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church,

all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father (God ), now and for ever. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP

It’s all done! Finished! Settled!

God took the whole, long list of our sins and forgave them!

God nailed them to the cross.

Every crime, violation and sacrilege!

Every shortcoming, disgrace and failure!

God eliminated every single record of our godless behavior!

God nailed them to the cross.

There is nothing else to do, but to worship and praise God!

And to be careful not to pull out any of God’s nails!

OPENING HYMN: “I am Thine, O Lord" #419 UMH

OPENING PRAYER God, why do we have one church for Blacks,

another for Whites, another for Hispanics,

another for Natives, and another for Asians?

And why do we have one church for professionals,

and another for the blue collar workers,

and another for people living on welfare?

This is not the way Jesus taught us to live, God.

He crossed all the boundaries of his day.

Send him to lead us across today’s boundaries.

Gather your children of every color and social status,

into one glorious and unified congregation

that points the way for the rest of our world. Amen.

DEACON’S MOMENT ON RACIAL JUSTICE

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O holy and merciful God,

we confess that we have not always taken upon ourselves

the yoke of obedience,

nor been willing to seek and to do your perfect will.

We have not loved you

with all our heart and mind and soul and strength,

neither have we loved our neighbors as ourselves.

You have called to us in the need of our sisters and brothers,

and we have passed unheeding on our way.

In the pride of our hearts, and our unwillingness to repent,

we have turned away from the cross of Christ,

and have grieved your Holy Spirit.

This is the message we have heard from God and proclaim to you,

that God is light and in God there is no darkness at all.

If we walk in the light, as God is in the light,

we have fellowship with one another,

and the blood of Jesus the Son cleanses us from all sin.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

We praise and thank you, O God, for all you have given us.

We praise and thank you for Jesus, who saves and makes us new.

We praise and thank you for all creation,

but especially for humanity made in your image.

Help us see you in every person,

and especially those who seem different from us

whose race or nationality is unlike our own.

Accept our gifts as signs of our gratitude,

our praise, our actions,

our money, our service to others,

and help us live and speak all these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.
